The study by the RAC Foundation claims most people think of a hybrid as an off-spring of two animals or plants.
Of those that do know it is a car with a combination of a petrol engine with an electric motor, 70% though it has to be plugged in as they admitted they don’t know how a hybrid works. Others responded by saying they did not realise that the driver does not have to switch between petrol and electric.
The motoring organisation is calling for more to be done to combat these myths such as education programmes to encourage eco-driving and improve awareness of hybrid and fuel cell vehicles
The foundation’s executive director, Edmund King, said people need to be shown that hybrids are not freak animals or plants but important technological innovative cars for the present and future.
He added that our motoring vision of the future involves technologically advanced hybrid cars as a longer term stepping stone to the zero emissions hydrogen fuel cell car.
The results of the study were timed to coincide with the launch of a new hybrid Honda Civic and the publication of Government’s UK Climate Change Programme 2006.
