This hugely appealing funster revives the 1960s spirit of small low cost, low gravity, low powered roadsters, but with all the added safety and reliability trimmings modern technologies bring. An
optional Sport pack with bigger wheels and tyres adds to the experience.
Just one three-cylinder 698cc turbocharged engine is available, although a Brabus tuned version was introduced in mid-2004 providing a 17% increase in power.
It certainly doesn't feel under equipped with all models getting electric power steering, sports seats, leather steering wheel and gear knob, alloy wheels, a radio/CD player and an electric soft-top. The Roadster Coupé gets wider tyres and a two panel removable hard-
top. Brabus models get leather trim and a body kit.
The 61bhp version with its meagre 116g/km emissions gets a VED banding of B and therefore qualifies fro exemption from the London congestion charge. As if this wasnt saving some of you enough money, with its 68.9 extra urban mpg and combined 57.6 mpg fuel figures it just proves fun driving isnt just for the elite. Even the Brabus tweeked version gets a VED banding C and returns almost 55mpg combined.
The Roadster has no Euro NCAP crash-test yet, however buyers get the latest electronic stability and braking systems (ESP stability control and ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution) as well as two airbags, and a strong safety cell to protect in an accident. Side airbags are standard on the Brabus. Immobiliser and remote central locking are standard.
Every Smart Roadster comes with a 2 year Unlimited Mileage Warranty, as well as a minimum 6 year anti-perforation warranty. In addition Smart also provide 24 months Smartmove Assistance breakdown cover within UK and Europe
About the manufacturer
Smart have always looked at ways in which they could use environmentally friendly materials in the production of their cars, subjecting each Smart component to a continuous ecological improvement process. Smart state that all harmful substances like lead, chromium, mercury and cadmium are banned from the production process, whilst PVC is avoided wherever possible.
Recycling is clearly on area affecting us all as well as the manufacturers of motor vehicles. Smart are no exception and trying to do its part building all its vehicles from pre assembled modules which makes the dismantling much simpler. By introducing smart centre recycling across Europe it has established a comprehensive workshop disposal system in all
distribution countries . Smart is even trying to ensure that as many of its parts as possible are delivered in reusable packaging.
Energy savings are also high on the companies priorities, not only are all Smart buildings thermally insulated but where possible energy released during production is recycled, for example excess heat from injection moulding machinery is used to heat paining cabin air supplies.
Generally regarded as the most environment friendly painting method, Smart uses a powder coating techniques on all its cars. This uses up to 40% less energy than conventional painting methods and involves no water consumption or waste. Whats
more there is zero slurry and absolutely no solvent emissions.
