Rally will showcase Ford fuel technology

Ford will be showcasing its latest environmentally friendly engine technology at the forthcoming Brighton to London eco rally.

While the famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run marks the abolition of the Red Flag Act – which required a man to walk in front of motorised vehicles - the first ever eco rally follows the route in reverse to bring tomorrow's alternative fuel technologies to the capital.

Driven by television presenter and motor journalist Quentin Willson, a hydrogen-powered Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) will be the centrepiece of Ford’s line up.

The Explorer FCV prototype has been developed in North America and its revolutionary fuel cell system is capable of achieving a range of 350 miles on the zero-emission fuel.

FCVs run on electricity generated from a fuel cell stack. In the stack, oxygen and hydrogen are combined to produce electricity, with water vapour as the harmless by-product. The electricity is used to power a motor/transaxle, which drives the wheels.

Accompanying the advanced-technology FCV will be a number of Ford Focus Flexifuel cars, representing low-carbon models that are on sale now.

Ford of Britain chairman, Roelant de Waard, said that the company - and rally organisers Revolve - are closely aligned in promoting sustainable transport solutions such as FCVs, hydrogen and biofuels.
