Next generation diesel from Mitsubishi
26 April 2007
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced that it is to bring forward the development and introduction of a new, cleaner diesel engine as part of the manufacturer’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The next-generation 2.0-litre class diesel engine will first be introduced in the European market where demand for diesel engines is strongest.
Currently under development, the new engine will be put into production at the Kyoto Powertrain Plant in early 2009 - one year earlier than scheduled and following its introduction in Europe it will be phased into other markets.
Being developed jointly with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the new diesel engine is a key element in their plans to lower CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions.
The new engine’s green credentials will not compromise power and performance, however. Thanks to a new high-efficiency turbocharger and high-efficiency combustion characteristics the new power unit will deliver class-topping power output whilst meeting all European emissions regulations.
The new diesel engine is positioned, alongside its electric vehicle technology, as a core element in the ‘Mitsubishi Motors Environment Initiative Program 2010’ and a spokesman for the company says that bringing forward its introduction will allow the company to meet the needs of the growing number of environment-conscious customers.
