Motorsport racing ahead with green technology
13 May 2008
It may seem unlikely but motorsport could soon be leading the way when it comes to developing green motoring technology.
According to the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), motorsport is the best and quickest proving ground for the energy efficient engines and greener fuels the world is now demanding.
Speaking at the MIA’s second European Cleaner Racing Conference in Birmingham, the organisation’s chief executive, Chris Aylett, said that no engines use energy more efficiently than those which power today’s Formula One cars.
He said the engineers behind them are the best in the world and if the leading road car manufacturers were to fully engage with such innovators, the development of greener engines and fuels could be greatly accelerated.
The conference also heard that these engineers were already hard at work in the sport, including Ulrich Baretzky, who first predicted a diesel-powered Audi would win Le Mans - which it did in both 2006 and 2007.
Now Richard Karlstetter of Audi’s fuel supplier Shell has predicted an Audi will soon win Le Mans powered by their second-generation bio-to–liquid diesel fuel (BTL) made from agricultural and forestry residues such as straw and wood chips.
