Joint venture will lead to cleaner cars

18 April 2007

Car maker Nissan has announced a joint venture with Japanese electronics specialist NEC to develop lithium-ion batteries for use in the next generation of hybrid and electric cars.

Nissan is keen to catch up with rivals Toyota and Honda in the hybrid field: despite being a leader in battery development some 15 years ago it currently doesn't offer a hybrid at all in its model range.

It now hopes to regain some lost ground by offering hybrids with much improved battery power, capacity, weight and price compared to today's hybrids by utilising lithium-ion batteries.

Once considered unsuitable for vehicle use, lithium-ion batteries are now thought to offer the key to more competitive powerpacks.

The new joint venture will see the creation of a new company, Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC), which will mass produce lithium-ion batteries with a set of unique properties that makes them a highly competitive and appealing energy-generation solution for future motor vehicles.

According to Carlos Tavares, executive vice president of Nissan, the new batteries will be available to other manufacturers and help to further accelerate the development of future generations of eco-friendly vehicles.

Nissan hopes to launch its first hybrid model by 2010.
